Anti-Skid Flooring — How Do You Make a Floor Safe in Wet Areas?

Slip safety comes from measurable surface traction, not from a product label. The working benchmark is dynamic coefficient of friction tested per ANSI A326.3, with pendulum testing per ASTM E303 where that method is specified. Traction is engineered by broadcasting graded aggregate into the resin — and it is only maintained if the cleaning regime keeps the texture open.

“Anti-slip” is one of the loosest words in flooring. It appears on datasheets with no test, no value and no method, which is why wet-area floors keep failing audits after they were bought as safe. This guide covers what is actually measured, how texture is built, and why the cleaning contract matters as much as the specification.

How Is Slip Resistance Actually Measured?

Two methods dominate specification work. ANSI A326.3 measures dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) on a wet surface and is the reference most commonly cited for hard-surface flooring; it defines both the test conditions and the threshold for level interior spaces expected to be walked on when wet. ASTM E303 uses a swinging pendulum to give a British Pendulum Number, and is widely used where that method is written into the project specification.

Beware of datasheets quoting older static-friction methods that have since been withdrawn from active use. A retired method produces a number with no current standing, and an auditor who knows the field will treat it as no evidence at all.

The critical qualifier on any of these numbers: they describe the floor as tested. In-service slip safety also depends on contamination, footwear and cleaning — which is why a measured floor still needs a maintenance regime behind it.

How Is Traction Built Into a Resin Floor?

  • Broadcast aggregate — graded quartz or similar is scattered into the wet coat and locked in by the topcoat. Grade size controls how aggressive the finish is.
  • Aggregate in the topcoat — finer particles suspended in the final coat give a lighter, more cleanable texture.
  • Textured screeds — quartz or PU concrete systems that are inherently textured through their full build.
  • Zoned finishes — the same floor carries an aggressive profile at ramps and washdown points and a smoother finish where cleaning matters more.

The trade-off is fixed and worth stating plainly: more texture means more traction and harder cleaning. Over-specifying grit in a food or clinical room creates a soil trap, which is its own hygiene failure.

Which Areas Need Which Level of Texture?

(Texture level is matched to the actual contaminant and cleaning method for each zone; the specified build is confirmed per TDS.)

Why Do Anti-Skid Floors Stop Working?

Almost always for one of four reasons. Grease and soap films fill the texture until the surface behaves as if it were smooth — common in kitchens cleaned with the wrong detergent or dilution. Wear flattens the exposed aggregate in high-traffic lanes while the rest of the floor stays fine, so the failure is localised. Over-coating during a refresh buries the profile under fresh resin. And the specification was wrong from the start, applying a light texture where oil or grease was always going to be present. The wider deterioration picture is in how long epoxy flooring lasts.

What Should a Specification Actually Say?

A defensible clause names the test method and the zone, not an adjective. State the method (ANSI A326.3, or ASTM E303 where required), state which areas are wet-rated, state the cleaning regime the floor will receive, and require slip testing on the installed floor rather than on a laboratory panel. Then keep the record — an audit asks for the report, not the brochure. Anti-skid finishes for these zones are built through anti-skid epoxy flooring and quartz flooring, with washdown-grade builds in ZENPU. Wet-processing context is covered in flooring for food and beverage plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is anti-slip flooring measured?

The common reference is dynamic coefficient of friction tested per ANSI A326.3 on a wet surface, with pendulum testing per ASTM E303 used where that method is specified. A claim without a named test method and a measured value carries no weight in an audit.

Which slip test should a specification reference?

Reference ANSI A326.3 for dynamic coefficient of friction, or ASTM E303 pendulum testing where that method is required by the project. Older static-friction methods that have been withdrawn should not be cited, as their results carry no current standing.

How do you make an epoxy floor non-slip?

Traction is created by broadcasting graded aggregate such as quartz into the wet coat and locking it in with a topcoat, or by using an inherently textured screed. Grade size controls how aggressive the finish is, and the level is matched zone by zone to the contaminant present.

Why has our anti-skid floor become slippery again?

Usually the texture has been filled or buried: grease and soap films block the profile when cleaning chemistry or dilution is wrong, traffic flattens exposed aggregate in specific lanes, or a refresh coat was applied over the texture. Each has a different remedy.

Should the whole facility have anti-skid flooring?

No. More texture means harder cleaning, so an aggressive profile in a cleanroom or food-contact area becomes a soil trap and a hygiene risk. Texture is specified by zone according to the contaminant actually present.
