OVERVIEW

What is Polished Concrete Flooring?

Polished concrete is a mechanically processed floor in which a concrete slab is ground with progressively finer diamond abrasives and treated with a chemical densifier, then polished to the desired sheen. The result is a dense, dust-proof, abrasion-resistant surface that uses the concrete itself as the finished floor — no coating to peel or delaminate. It is prized for its clean industrial-modern look, very low maintenance, and long service life, with the gloss tuned anywhere from a soft matte to a reflective high-shine. How this compares against a bonded resin floor — on chemicals, hygiene and lifetime cost — is covered in polished concrete vs epoxy flooring.

THE POLYZEN SYSTEM

How the System Is Built

Polished concrete is not a coating — it is the slab itself, refined in stages. Tap any layer to see its role.

Polish & Guard

Final Sheen

Final fine-grit polishing brings the surface to the chosen sheen — matte, satin or high-gloss — and a penetrating guard is applied to boost stain resistance and protect the shine. System values: Per Project Specification.

POLYZEN APPLIED SYSTEM

Engineered & Installed by POLYZEN

Polished concrete is delivered as a POLYZEN Applied System — surveyed, designed and installed turnkey by POLYZEN's trained applicators, with grind level, densifier, sheen and aggregate exposure specified to your project.

04
FINISH & PERFORMANCE

The Slab, Refined

Polished concrete turns the structural slab into the finished floor — minimal material, maximum life. Grind level, sheen and aggregate exposure are specified to the project; performance is confirmed on the project specification.

The achievable finish depends on the condition and quality of the slab, which is assessed at survey. POLYZEN specifies finished values on the project specification and does not publish fabricated figures.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is polished concrete a coating?
No. It is the slab itself, mechanically ground through progressive diamond grits and chemically densified. Nothing is laid on top, so there is no coating to peel, blister or delaminate, and no recoat cycle to budget for.
What is the difference between polished concrete and an epoxy floor?
An epoxy floor is a resin system applied over the slab; polished concrete is the slab refined into the finish. Epoxy gives you colour, chemical resistance and a build thickness you choose. Polished concrete gives you a dust-proof, very low-maintenance surface with a natural aggregate look. The trade-offs are set out in polished concrete versus epoxy.
Can any existing slab be polished?
Not automatically. The result depends on the slab's strength, flatness, how much aggregate is exposed when grinding starts, and the number of cracks, patches and service cuts already in it. A survey decides whether the slab is a candidate, and what remedial work it needs first.
How slippery is a polished concrete floor?
Sheen level and traction are separate things, and both are measured rather than assumed. The reference for wet dynamic coefficient of friction is ANSI A326.3, and values are per project specification. Where the floor will regularly be wet, the finish and any treatment are chosen for that condition — the same logic used for anti-skid flooring in wet areas.
How is it maintained?
Dust-mopping and a neutral-pH cleaner for routine care. There is no recoat cycle, and burnishing or a light re-polish restores the sheen after years of traffic rather than months. Acidic cleaners are the one thing to keep off it.
Where should polished concrete not be used?
Where the duty is chemical or thermal rather than mechanical. Hot washdown, steam cleaning, thermal cycling and aggressive chemical spillage call for a PU or epoxy system instead. We will say so rather than sell a finish that will not survive the process.
What does polished concrete flooring cost?
The slab drives it. This work uses the concrete you already have, so its condition, flatness and the repairs it needs decide the scope more than the finished look does. For an indicative budget in about two minutes, without a call, use CostMyFloor. A firm quotation follows a site survey.
